Mind Gym by Gary Mack

Learn to train your mental fortitude by hearing stories about how elite athletes prepare mentally to accomplish feats most can only dream of. Athletes are known for their physical fitness and relentless practice, but what is less known is the impact preparing their mind for success has on differentiating the great from the average.

Reflections: Your mind’s influence on your performance is becoming more and more understood by some of the world’s most elite athletes. Many of the same lessons are transferrable to business and leadership. For example, many athletes will visualize success in order to ‘get in the zone’. Executives have can follow suit to realize their own success.

Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown

Stretched too thin? Overworked and burnt out? Feel like you’ve worked all day, gone to meetings, and accomplished very little? If so, this is the book for you.

The book focuses on a new way of working and living your life, focusing on doing what is essential, nothing more. It’s a liberating concept that will help the reader apply more selective criteria in a systematic way.

Reflections: Many of us are told to work smarter, not harder. It sounds great in theory, but it’s often difficult to implement. This book offers actionable solutions to get focused on what’s important as defined by how you design your life. As you read through the book, I challenge you to keep a list of the non-essentials in your life, for ridding yourself of those will allow you to focus on what’s truly important. This book especially resonated with me because of my commitment to living your life true to your core values.

Genre: Self Improvement & Business

Stay Sane in an Insane World by Greg Harden

Life advice from an influencer who has inspired numerous athletes from Tom Brady to Michael Phelps. Greg Harden guides the reader through strategies to perform optimally and believe in yourself. Some topics include:

  • Stop being afraid of being afraid: Fear and self-doubt are the enemy

  • Control the controllables : Stop letting others control how you feel about yourself

  • Commit, improve, and maintain: Make small improvements every day

  • Practice self-love and self-acceptance

Reflections: A number of topics in this book resonated with me deeply. The one that stands out the most is to ‘not let others have power over how you feel about yourself’. For myself and my clients, too often we give away too much influence unnecessarily. There are a number of factors including self-confidence, fear, etc. that contribute to these actions. Greg Harden does a great job of helping us understand where that may be coming from and take action to overcome it, living a more powerful life.

Arete by Brian Johnson

Book cover titled 'Areté: Activate Your Heroic Potential' by Brian Johnson, Volume 1.

Content living a life of mediocrity? Then this book is not for you. Arete means virtue or excellence. Arete is a guide to gain resilience by leveraging science and ancient wisdom, Arete teaches tools to take your life to the next level. The book serves as a catalyst for change, providing actionable ways in which to reframe the way people look at different challenges. Lessons in the book are intended to focus the reader while increasing their energy and motivation to take action.

Reflections: An absolute gem, looking at how to realize your potential in every aspect of life. I love how the author divides the book into sub-sections that can easily be referred back to. Each topic is relevant, succinct, and actionable. The book aggregates input and research from numerous subject matter experts, adding to the credibility of the ideas provided. I felt empowered in reading each section and believe there is something in this for everyone. Arete is the type of book you can come back to again and again. The only part I could do without was the end, where the author tries to aggressively pitch his training program (I recommend skipping that part as it takes away from the content of the book).
